A New York truck driver is facing a manslaughter charge after Mesquite police say he backed an 18-wheeler on an Interstate 30 ramp or connection, leading to a crash that killed a Garland woman.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of September 4 on I-30 in Mesquite, Texas, according to police.
Investigators identified the driver of the Chevrolet SUV as 33-year-old Lisa Maldonado of Garland. Maldonado was taken to a local hospital after the crash, where she died from her injuries.
Police say the Freightliner tractor-trailer was being backed on the interstate connection when the collision occurred. The semi driver, identified as 39-year-old Khasan Begbaev of Brooklyn, New York, was not injured and remained at the scene.

Khasan Begbaev, 39, was arrested and charged with manslaughter after Mesquite police alleged he backed a Freightliner tractor-trailer on an Interstate 30 connection, leading to the crash that killed Lisa Maldonado, 33. The charge is an allegation, and Begbaev is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Begbaev was later arrested and charged with one count of manslaughter. The charge is an allegation. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Backing a tractor-trailer is one of the highest-risk maneuvers a commercial driver can make. Doing it near active interstate traffic creates almost no margin for error, especially in darkness and at highway speeds. A missed exit, wrong turn, or routing mistake can be frustrating, but it is never worth putting a truck in reverse where other motorists may have little time to react.
Police have not released all evidence from the investigation, including whether they believe other factors contributed to the crash. The case remains under investigation, and additional court filings could provide a clearer picture of what happened.
For now, a 33-year-old woman is dead, and a truck driver is facing a serious criminal charge after an alleged decision to back an 18-wheeler on an interstate connection. Its a reminder that when a commercial driver misses a turn, the only safe answer may be to keep moving and find the next legal place to turn around.

He is *not* a “New York man” nor is he *from* Brooklyn. He’s an immigrant (probably illegal) who is not qualified to drive a semi. And the BS about guilty until proven innocent. He was behind the wheel of semi that killed the woman. The semi didn’t like the woman, the driver did.
