MONONA, Wis. — A semi-truck barreled into stopped traffic on Madison’s Beltline this week, triggering a violent four-vehicle chain-reaction crash that sent four people to the hospital and left one driver seriously injured. Dashcam footage released by police now shows the moments leading up to the collision.
The crash occurred Wednesday, Sept. 2, on eastbound U.S. Highway 12/18 near Monona, in the Madison area. The roadway was in an active construction zone when traffic ahead of the semi slowed or stopped.
The semi driver was identified by Monona Police as Darin Oberhart, 58, of Iowa. Police said Oberhart will be cited for inattentive driving and driving too fast for conditions in a work/construction
According to Monona Police, video recovered from the truck shows the semi traveling approximately 63 mph while approaching the construction area, where the posted speed limit was 55 mph. The truck had reportedly slowed to roughly 53 mph immediately before striking traffic ahead.
The newly released footage provides a stark look at how quickly a routine construction-zone slowdown can become catastrophic when a commercial vehicle approaches traffic without enough distance to stop.
Dashcam Shows Traffic Ahead Before Impact
The truck’s forward-facing camera captured the approach and subsequent collision. Traffic can be seen backed up ahead before the semi crashes into a vehicle, setting off a chain reaction involving four vehicles.
The collision was not simply a minor rear-end crash. The force of a highway-speed commercial vehicle striking passenger traffic resulted in multiple injuries.

Four people were transported to area hospitals. Police said the person suffering the most significant injuries sustained multiple fractures and was listed in serious but stable condition.
Authorities have not reported any fatalities.
Police Say Driver Will Be Cited
Monona Police said the semi driver is expected to receive citations for inattentive driving and driving too fast for conditions.
That second allegation is important.
A posted speed limit establishes the maximum lawful speed under appropriate conditions. It does not necessarily mean that traveling at that speed is safe when approaching construction, congestion or stopped traffic.
Commercial drivers are expected to continually adjust their speed and following distance to account for traffic and roadway conditions, particularly when operating a vehicle that can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds.
The dashcam will likely be a significant piece of evidence because it doesn’t merely document the impact. It captures the seconds preceding it, allowing investigators to examine the traffic conditions ahead of the truck, its speed and when the developing hazard became apparent.
Construction Zones Leave Little Margin for Error
Construction zones present a particularly dangerous combination for commercial vehicles.
Lane restrictions can produce abrupt backups even when traffic had been moving normally only moments earlier. Drivers may encounter reduced speed limits, merging vehicles, workers, concrete barriers and traffic queues extending beyond the visible work area.
For a fully loaded tractor-trailer, recognizing that slowdown early can be the difference between an ordinary braking event and a catastrophic collision.
At 63 mph, a vehicle travels approximately 92 feet every second. Even before accounting for the truck’s actual braking distance, several hundred feet can disappear during the time it takes a driver to recognize a hazard, decide how to respond and begin meaningful braking.
That makes the footage particularly valuable from a safety standpoint.
The important question isn’t simply what happened at the moment of impact. It is what was happening five, ten or even fifteen seconds before the collision.
Was traffic visibly slowing? How much following distance existed? When did the stopped vehicles become visible? When did the truck begin decelerating? And was the truck’s speed appropriate for what was developing ahead?
Those are the kinds of questions investigators can now examine using the truck’s own camera.
Dashcams Don’t Pick Sides
The crash also illustrates something TWOSU News has repeatedly emphasized about commercial dashcams: the camera doesn’t automatically protect the truck driver. It protects the evidence.
When another motorist cuts off a semi, brake-checks a truck or causes a collision, dashcam footage can be one of a driver’s strongest defenses against an inaccurate account of what happened.
But when the truck driver makes the mistake, that same camera can document it just as clearly.
In this case, investigators have something far more useful than competing recollections from several motorists following a violent collision. They have a recorded view of the roadway immediately before impact.
For professional drivers, there is a simple lesson in that footage.
When approaching construction, congestion or anything else capable of producing an unexpected backup, the safest stopping distance is the distance you create before you need it.
