IBERVILLE PARISH, La. A devastating crash involving two tractor-trailers shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge early Tuesday morning, Aug. 25.
The crash occurred near the Whiskey Bay area of the bridge at approximately 11:50 p.m. Monday, roughly one hour before dashcam footage obtained by TWOSU News was recorded at the scene.
The collision involved two tractor-trailers traveling eastbound on I-10. Based on video from the scene, one of the trucks appears to have struck the rear of another tractor-trailer. The exact sequence of events leading to the collision has not yet been independently confirmed.
The impact was catastrophic.
Video from the scene appears to show that the force of the collision separated the cab of one tractor-trailer from its frame, leaving the heavily damaged truck along the right side of the interstate.

The driver of the truck was reportedly injured in the collision. The extent of those injuries remains unknown at this time, and TWOSU News has not independently confirmed whether the crash resulted in any fatalities.
Dashcam footage recorded at approximately 12:50 a.m. Tuesday shows emergency vehicles at the scene and the damaged tractor-trailer along the right side of the roadway. The GPS coordinates embedded in the footage place the recording on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge near the Whiskey Bay area.
Eastbound I-10 was closed for approximately one hour as first responders arrived at the scene and emergency operations got underway.
The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge carries I-10 for roughly 18 miles across the Atchafalaya Basin and is a major freight corridor connecting Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The identities of the drivers and the trucking companies involved have not been confirmed.
UPDATE: Driver Rescued After Semi Cab Goes Into Canal
New information released by the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office confirms the driver of an 18-wheeler was rescued after the truck’s cab went over the side of Interstate 10 and landed in the canal below.
The crash occurred Monday, Aug. 24, on I-10 East near mile marker 128.
According to information released by the sheriff’s office and reported Tuesday by WGNO, the tractor’s cab went over the side of the interstate and came to rest in shallow water.
The driver survived the crash and was able to climb onto and stand on top of the partially submerged cab while awaiting rescuers.
Deputies with the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office responded by boat and retrieved the driver from the canal.
The new information helps explain the severity of the crash scene captured in video obtained by TWOSU News, which showed the tractor’s chassis on the interstate with the cab apparently separated from the remainder of the truck.
Authorities have not released additional information about the driver’s condition or publicly identified him.
