Houston, TX| A tractor-trailer traveling the wrong way on Interstate 5 crashed near the Weed Rest Area Saturday night after motorists reported encountering the truck heading southbound in the northbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Several motorists encountered the semi traveling directly against northbound traffic. Drivers took evasive action and called 911 as the truck continued south in the northbound lanes.
The truck eventually crashed near the Weed Rest Area. CHP said the semi did not strike another vehicle.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
CHP has not publicly identified the driver or said whether alcohol, drugs or another substance is suspected. An arrest on suspicion of DUI is an allegation, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Motorists Avoid Collision
CHP credited motorists with staying alert, avoiding the oncoming truck and immediately reporting the wrong-way driver.
Despite the potential for a head-on collision, authorities said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Photos released by CHP show a red tractor and white trailer at the crash scene. The tractor came to rest along the concrete barrier while the trailer extended across the roadside area.
Emergency crews responded to the scene as the damaged combination vehicle was secured.
Trailer Displays Number Associated With Legend Transportation
Photos reviewed by TWOSU News show the telephone number 855-210-1300 displayed on the rear of the trailer.
The same number is published by Legend Transportation as a driver recruiting number.
The photographs therefore show a trailer carrying contact information associated with Legend Transportation. The images alone, however, do not establish the employment status of the driver, ownership of the tractor or the operating arrangement under which the equipment was being used Saturday night.
TWOSU News has not independently confirmed that the arrested driver was employed by Legend Transportation.
Questions Remain About Wrong-Way Route
Authorities have not said where the tractor-trailer entered the interstate traveling in the wrong direction or how far it traveled before crashing.
CHP also has not publicly released the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration, toxicology results or additional details about the basis for the DUI arrest.
The driver’s identity had not been publicly released as of publication.
The incident remains under investigation.
