ROMEOVILLE, Ill|A five-day commercial-truck enforcement course began Monday at the Romeoville Police Department in Illinois, training law-enforcement officers on truck weight, dimensions, safety and equipment violations including the use of portable scales.
The course, titled “Basic Truck Weight Enforcement 1 & Portable Weight Scale Certification,” runs from August 17 through August 21 at the Romeoville Police Department, 1050 West Romeo Road. Training is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
According to Tri-River Police Training Region, also known as Mobile Team Unit 16, the program is the first level in a series of truck-safety enforcement courses. It focuses on weight, vehicle dimensions, safety and equipment issues involving second-division vehicles operating on Illinois highways. The final portion of Friday’s training is devoted to portable weight-scale certification.
The instructors listed for the course include retired Sleepy Hollow Police Chief James Linane, retired Elburn Police Sgt. Ron Brandenburg and Glendale Heights Police Officer Zach Pugh.
For truck drivers, the training is worth watching because portable-scale certification gives participating officers another tool for enforcing commercial-vehicle weight laws away from permanent weigh stations.
Romeoville itself has specific rules governing oversize and overweight vehicle movements. Village regulations require drivers operating under special movement permits to carry those permits and produce them when requested by law enforcement. Certain truck-route exclusion areas can also carry enhanced penalties for violations.
What is not yet clear is whether this week’s training is connected to any planned enforcement operation or increased roadside inspections after officers become certified. The publicly available training announcement does not identify how many officers are attending, which departments they represent, or whether a coordinated commercial-vehicle enforcement detail will follow.
Those unanswered questions are where this story could get more interesting.
