Traffic signals can be seen above the intersection as the SUV moves across the roadway. The pickup approaches from the opposite direction, and the distance between the two vehicles closes rapidly.
Once the SUV enters the pickup’s path, there appears to be very little time remaining to avoid the collision.

Drivers making a left turn need enough time not simply to enter the intersection, but to completely clear the path of approaching traffic.
When that calculation is wrong, there may be little either driver can do once their paths intersect.

A tractor-trailer takes longer to accelerate through an intersection and requires substantially more space to complete many turns than a passenger vehicle.
